Blue Jay

Updated: Aug 26, 2024

(Cianocitta cristata)

The handsome and noisy Blue Jay wears a blue costume adorned with patches of white and black. It shrieks at hawks and owls that it may encounter and has no fear to spy on the food stocking behaviour of squirrels and chipmunks, only to return a few minutes later and steal the bounty. We could well say the Blue Jay is the buccaneer of the bird population. It has no respect for other birds, and yet he has an outstanding elegance of movement. You will not see the Blu Jay grabbing on to a bird feeder as this is beneath its status. It will anytime grab food from other ground animal's living quarters and it is famous for stealing eggs from other bird's nests.

At Breeches the Blue Jay is seen late March or early April so when you see the Blue Jay you may count that spring is around the corner.

Common calls are harsh jay-jay and thief-thief.
