Chipmunk (Tamias striatus)

Length: Head and body 16 cm, Tail: 10 cm

Characteristics: Stripes on the head, those on the back end near the tail.

Habitat: Forest, Brushes, gardens.


Chipmunks are terrestrial but may also climb. Its tunnel may measure up to 4 m. and includes a food-locker, a clean room, a garbage room and latrines. The food-locker is spacious; the chipmunk gathers up to 20 lts of nuts and other foods. If it hibernates , it wake up early to feed himself. The babies (between two and eight) are born in the spring or mid-summer. Like the squirrels, they are blind at birth.
