This is probably the most common representative of the Woodpecker family around Breeches lake. You will see him both in Winter and Summer. Its main colours are black and white except for a distinctive red patch on the back of its head. Do not confuse the Downy Woodpecker with the Hairy Woodpecker. They are similar but the Hairy is slightly bigger in size and has a much heavier and longer bill in comparison with the size of the bird itself. But the little Downy is a more friendly fellow who will visit all year round.
