False Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa)

Updated: Nov 6, 2024

The flowers of this plant are carried in a cone-shaped spray at the end of the stem ( a "terminal raceme" or "panicle") whereas the flowers of the true Solomon's seal are hung like wash on a line from the stem. The flower appears in May and June, but it may bloom as late as July at Breeches. The stem usually grows on a slant to a height of from 1 to 3 feet and the flower spray eventually turns into a cluster of red berries.
