The Flicker is also called Golden-winged Woodpecker. It is a regular summer resident at Breeches and you will often see him pecking on the lawn. He utters loud cries including the piercing "flickering" call that gives him his name. It is a woodpecker that spends much of his time on the ground, cleaning your ants nests. It has a red patch at the back of the head and dark cross-streaks on its back and many black spots on its underpants. It nests in a hole in a tree and if one is on the nest and you knock on the tree below, the Flicker will stick his head out of the hole to see who is "knocking".
