The flying squirrel does not fly; it glides using a muscular membrane that runs along its sides. To glide, it jumps by extending its legs and uses its tail as a rudder. It can land up to 20 m from its starting point and move to the other side of a tree, in case an owl follows it. It is the only nocturnal squirrel in North America.
