The Goldfinch is a regular visitor at Breeches, easily identifiable with its shining yellow costume. The male has a black patch over its forehead. However, it loses the patch during the winter. They fly with a long bounding motion riding great waves in the air, singing along "Per-chick-o-ree, Per-chick-o-ree" in musical tones. They are rarely silent and chatter while feeding or resting.
The nest is placed in a fork in an outer branch high up in a tree and it is by July that they lay 4 to 6 eggs in a thisledown cradle.
The male feeds the female while she is brooding and is a good provider for the young until they leave the nest. Then they go to join the cheerful flock of Goldfinches that are so pleasant and friendly. Flight note is a sweet per-chick-o-ree.
