Groundhog (Marmota monax)
Length: Head and body: 40 cm. Tail: 17 cm.
Characteristics: Large head, stocky body, short legs.
Habitat: Sparse forests, rocky terrain, and roadside ditches.
Contrary to popular belief, the groundhog does not leave its cave until February 2nd to see its shadow. It remains locked there until the end of winter. Its cave may have several entrances and tunnels. Once outside their habitat, the males fight among themselves before leaving in search of a female. The young are born four weeks after mating. A month later, they are ready to leave their father's habitat. They prefer rock gardens near green lawns.
