Kingfischer

Updated: Nov 19, 2024

The Belted Kingfisher is about 13 inches long and flies along Breeches Lake with a rattling cry. It has blue and white colours and occasionally dives headlong into the water in pursuit of some small fish. It is larger than a Robin and it has a rough dark crest. The female has a band of reddish underneath, while the male has a white band. They nest in holes in banks, either along water or as near to water as possible. Do not confuse the Kingfisher with the Blue Jay. Although similar in size and colour, the beak is much bigger on the Kingfisher.
