White Ash (Fraxinus americana)

Updated: Aug 25, 2024

We can see a variety of Ash at Breeches, but the most common one is the White Ash. Its wood is valuable for its hardiness and soft surface without many knots. It grows tall and straight up to 24 m. (80 ft.).

The Ash has compound leaves and they grow opposite to each other (see pictures) along the branchlets. They are also recognized by the typical winged seed that usually is produced in abundance.

The trunk has greyish-brown bark with a neat network of arrow-head shaped hollows running in vertical fashion. He compound leaves have 5 to 9 leaflets, each about 2 to 6 inches long. The “samara” or winged seed  is 1 to 2 inches long and they are a delicacy to many birds in the spring.
