Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar advena)

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

This is the most common nenuphar (water lily) flower in Breeches Lake. It may be found in bloom from April to September. Take a canoe ride on the high waters of Breeches Lake and you will find it in different locations near the shore. It has 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter and has a large core or raised center composed of pistils, stamens and petals. What looks like petals to the ordinary observer are the 6 sepals that are also a glowing golden-yellow. The thick stems, large rounded leaves and seeds of the plant are food for deer, musk-rat, beaver, ducks and other forms of wildlife.
